We provide need-based resources to families affected by substance use disorders—supporting recovery and minimizing harm in the family unit.
Founded by Dr. Sandi and Mr. Mike Carlson, our team brings decades of hands-on experience in substance use treatment and recovery services.
Family Recovery Foundation was created to address the unmet needs of parents, helping families stay together and reduce long-term harm.
Dr. Sandi Carlson is the founder and clinical director of Mississippi Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center, where she leads with a focus on clinical innovation, trauma-informed care, and data-driven treatment outcomes. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Science in Substance Use Counseling from Nova Southeastern University, and a Ph.D. in Addiction Psychology. Dr. Carlson has authored research on addictive behaviors, dual diagnosis, and the role of impulsivity in heroin use. She is a trained EMDR therapist and certified hypnotherapist, with a specialization in trauma resolution and long-term recovery support. Since founding MSDATC in 2017, Dr. Carlson has been dedicated to expanding access to high-quality addiction treatment, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations. Her work includes active lobbying at the state level, advocating for legislation that improves behavioral health funding, reduces systemic barriers, and increases accessibility to care across Mississippi. Through her combined efforts in research, treatment, and advocacy, Dr. Carlson continues to be a leading voice in shaping a more responsive and equitable behavioral health system.
With over a decade of experience in the recovery community, Michael Carlson brings a deeply personal perspective to his role at Family Recovery Foundations. Having walked the path of addiction and long-term recovery himself, he has a unique understanding of the challenges families face, especially parents trying to heal while raising children. Motivated by his own journey and a strong desire to give back, Michael co-founded Family Recovery Foundations to help families find hope, stability, and support outside of traditional treatment settings. He focuses on community engagement, resource-building, and advocacy to ensure parents affected by substance use are not navigating recovery alone.
